What is web development?
Web development is all about
Getting the technical stuff up and running
WEB DEVELOPMENT
Once the web designer has done their work and the website design has been approved by the customer, it needs to be realized. We call this phase web development. The web designer started by sketching and describing how the website should look and how it should work, now the web developer needs to use their tools and skills to make it happen: building the website and getting the technical stuff running perfectly.
Of course, it's not straightforward, and here you can read more about why this part of the process is important and what you as a customer should be aware of.
The web developer gets the website to the finish line
The web developer's job is to get your website to the finish line. There is no one right way to do it, but there are many ways not to do it. If you don't get web development right, you risk your website not being found or visitors losing patience with it and choosing a competitor's site instead.
With Mr. Toucans as your supplier, you automatically get access to our vast and always up-to-date knowledge of the tools used to develop websites. In practical terms, this means that you get a top-tuned, data-driven website at an agreed and competitive price to which you can add.
How do you know if we're doing well?
If you don't know anything about web development, you're in the same boat as many other website buyers. At Mr. Toucans, we specialize in websites and web development, so you don't have to be. Because even though web development is perhaps the most important part of your website, it's completely invisible to most people, and not many people can assess the technical quality of a finished website.
Fortunately, there are a number of objective metrics that together give a good picture of how well the website is performing technically. We use them at Mr. Toucans and they are agreed upon among serious website providers.
Being data-driven is incredibly important to us, and the objective metrics are an example of that! It's our way of documenting the quality of what we do, and not least our customers' guarantee that our services are top notch.
Measuring points for whether the website is working
There are 4 key metrics in particular that we use at Mr. Toucans. Here you can read about what they are, why they are important and Mr. Toucans standard for how websites from us should perform.
Speed and speed
According to Google, a website should load in under 2 seconds. When we check the load time, we measure the average speed from a server in Europe with an unlimited connection. We measure how long it takes from when you open the page until it is fully loaded.
Mr. Toucan's standard: Websites load in under 2 seconds.
Google Core Web Vital
Google has defined 3 key statistics that together give an indication of how the website is experienced by users. The statistics measure performance, interaction and consistent layout, and the correlation between them has, after testing on millions of websites, proven to give a very good indication of how user-friendly the website is perceived.
Mr. Toucan's standard: Websites fall within Google's current definition of "good" for each of the three statistics. "Good" may not sound like much, but it's the highest level of the scale, the other two being "needs improvement" and "poor".
Google Analytics
Google Analytics is the classic tool that offers almost unlimited possibilities to see how users actually move around a website. These are important key figures such as whether a visitor only views a single page, how many pages are visited and for how long, and the total time spent on the website.
Mr. Toucan's standard: We regularly follow up on the customer's key figures and send a data report every month and make concrete recommendations when needed. For example, if we observe that the bounce rate is developing in the wrong direction, we will suggest a number of improvements.
Decided errors
While the first three points are about optimizing and making some things better, here we look for actual errors that need to be fixed. These can be 404 errors/page not found, incorrect website structure (H1 and H2), missing robots.txt and sitemap, duplicate content etc. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in hearing more about the different types of errors, we will simply state that the errors either result in a poorer experience for users or poorer results in search engines.
Mr. Toucan's standard: We do not deliver websites with outright errors.
What happens when the website is delivered?
At Mr. Toucans, we make sure your new website is running optimally when we hand it over to you, and we also teach you and your colleagues how to add content to the website. After that, it's up to you to keep it updated and alive. However, websites are like cars: they need service checks. This is partly because you can inadvertently make mistakes while working on the website, and partly because external requirements are constantly changing, for example when Google changes its rules of the game, also known as the Google algorithm. We are happy to help with ongoing analysis of the website's condition, i.e. analysis of the objective measuring points, followed up by specific advice on what is needed to get it running optimally again.
In fact, most customers choose to continue working with us after the website is delivered, so they know that the website continues to live up to its promise. We are proud of this, because it means they are satisfied and experience a tangible value in the ongoing monitoring of the website.
